Junior Boys' School

Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School is located in a predominately residential neighborhood, and has over time acquired several of the adjoining street-front properties creating a unique urban condition of institutional architecture on a historic residential street.

In response, the new Junior Boys' School appropriates the silhouette of a typical federation-era house, which is then scaled up, extruded, and sliced. Internally, the extruded silhouette is softened and rounded. The spaces are passively cooled by drawing cool air in from the floor-level windows through the classrooms to a thermal chimney.
